An excerpt of a story

The following section is from a story I had been writing last year and hope to continue at some point. Am doing it just for my own fun as I had this idea of a story which is very loosely being inspired by what has happened in my life, and some part of it loosely even happened after I had written it.

On her last day at work Kia felt relieved. Not anxious or nervous for the future, not even sad. She only felt relieved and, well, happy. She felt happy. Happier she had felt for a long time. So it had to be the right choice, she thought. “If I am feeling almost exited on my final day without having the next job in sight, the this is exactly how it should be”, she thought to herself while she was formulating her out-of-office note.

She resisted the temptation to instead of writing “I have moved on towards new challenges” to write “I decided to finally leave this dull job thanks to the six-month pay I am going to receive, because I let them fire me”, but decided not to. She did not want to burn all her bridges and the circles in the advertising world in Finland were small, let alone in Helsinki. Everybody had worked with everybody, or would be working with everybody.

Actually Kia had to restrict her happy mood from showing too much, as the colleagues who did not lose their job voluntarily, were mostly in shock. One of them had actually thought it would be completely fine to declare to Kia how she was “greedy” and “had no moral” when she had accepted the money without even being fired. “Sometimes in life one needs to just take a chance and seize the moment when it is presented to you. You should also be grateful that they decided to fire you only now and not last year, as otherwise you would have not gotten anything”, Kia replied, turned on her heels and walked away.

She had never liked the account manager. The only reason she had not gotten fired in the first round was the fact that during the 1st negotiations she had been in the middle of an important project, and the owners saw that it would be a less of a hassle to keep her at least at the end of project, then to get someone new to replace her. But once the project was done, so were her days. She was one of those people who were mostly hated by everyone around them, but could not see any wrong in their doing. At least finally, finally after these five years, Kia had gotten the final word.

After she had finished all her final tasks, hugged all her good colleagues, made some never-to-be-realized “we will definitely have lunch one day” declarations, she closed the door to the office one more time. Spring had finally arrived to this country of the North, sun was shining and birds were singing while she walked to the center of the town.

She had one bottle of sparkling wine on the other hand and on the another she had a bottle of champagne so she felt as if she was going to a party. One of her clients, her favorite one, had sent a bottle of champagne to her as a goodbye gift, and the sparkling wine was presented by the office to all people who were let go. She had first though she would like to celebrate the last day with Ville, as it truly was something to celebrate to her, and maybe even try to reconciliate the latest tensions, but then decided to call to her best friend.

“Hey, I got off now. They gave us a bottle of sparkling wine AND then my favorite client had sent me another one of expensive champagne and I was wondering, that as Ville would definitely not appreciate in drinking on an occasion like this…”

“Oh geez, I am sure that dull-face of a man would not know how to celebrate even if he would have to build a code to do it! No offence but those bottles would be much better spent on only the both of us. My boyfriend has a boys’ night out so you and your two new friends can certainly come over.”

Kia laughed at her best friend’s reply. Yes, she had definitely made the right choice.
