Package design: smoothie cups

Another one of my old works. The last course of my graphic design studies in 2014-2015 was package design. So we needed to design a package for an existing or a completely new product.

I decided to design take-away smoothie cups which would be totally washing machine proof and made from recycled plastic (as far as one can do that.) I was already very environmental conscious in 2015, especially with the straws!

I decided to go for this approach as (at least in 2015) I felt that in Finland there was enough selection of take-way cups which one can also wash after use, which would also look nice AND which would also keep the drink inside. I mean how many times have you had your smoothie or juice on your lap as the damn lid had opened? Or just leaked when you had accidentally tilted the cup too much? No more mess, thanks to these cups! Nor plastic to swim in the oceans and get eaten by turtles.

I actually started to think about a business idea for these cups and even came up with a name: Smooch. The cups come in four colors with fitting ingredient illustrations and the company logo.

The cups would look like the following:

Yellow color with yellow fruits

Orange cup with orange fruits:

Purple cup with berries:

Green cup with green vegetables:

The company logo would be on the other side of the cup, and of course with the matching color:

All the plastic parts would, as said, be machine washable and from recycled materials. And of course without dangerous particles! 3D printing these could actually be one option for the manufacturing.

The straw would also contain a cork, which one could attach at the top of the straw in order avoid spilling. So the cup could also be transported safely in a bag.

The cups could be bought by individuals from e.g. cafées or health food stores which also sell smoothies or juices. One would also need to be able to get his or her smoothie or juice into her own Smooch! cup. Later the cups could also be sold in supermarkets and from the online store. From the store the customers could also design their own patterns and colors.

The cup model was from the internet so I made all the other illustrations with Illustrator or PhotoShop. I was happy with this concept and so was the teacher, who said this was my best work of the course! Concept planning is something I truly love to do.
